“Form ever follows function…”
…is a part of one of my favorite quotes by Louis Sullivan, an architect of the Second Industrial Revolution (1870-1914) and mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. Sullivan, also known as “the father of skyscrapers”, prioritized functionality over beauty— which made his projects not just useful, but beautiful because of how they well they are used.
“It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic, of all things physical and metaphysical, of all things human, and all things super-human, of all true manifestations of the head, of the heart, of the soul, that the life is recognizable in its expression, that form ever follows function. This is the law.” - Louis Sullivan
I think of this idea every time I write. There are endless ways to express a thought, but when I find the exact words and put them in the right order to match a very specific feeling — those are the things that stay with me.
I don’t know what else to do with this life than to write the true manifestations of my head, heart, and soul— to make expressions recognizable. This is one attempt, I hope they read like we’re spending some good time together.
